Like many of you, we close out the year by reflecting on where we’ve been and envisioning where we’re headed. While it’s virtually impossible to capture all of our memories and milestones of the past 12 months here, we’ve compiled some highlights—from empowering patient stories and thrilling research developments to the ways we’re impacting our community locally and globally. Newsweek Ranks Barrow No. 14 Globally, No 10. Nationally for Neurosurgery

Newsweek released its 2025 list of the “World’s Best Specialized Hospitals for Neurosurgery,” naming Barrow as No. 14. The rankings culminate the results of a worldwide survey of medical professionals.

US News Names Barrow a Top Hospital for Rehabilitation

U.S. News & World Report again named Barrow as one of the country’s “Best Hospitals for Rehabilitation.” At No. 34 for 2024-25, the Institute climbed three spots from last year and six spots from the previous year.

Prime Study Site Announcement

The first participant in Neuralink’s PRIME Study demonstrated the ability to use brain activity to command an external device. The successful procedure for Neuralink’s N1 Implant was performed earlier this year at Barrow Neurological Institute.

Barrow Neurosurgery Residency Program Ranked No. 1 by Doximity

Doximity released its 2024-25 Residency Navigator, naming the Barrow Neurosurgery Residency Program No. 1 in the country based on reputation. The ranking factors in nominations, ratings, and reviews by Doximity’s network.

Barrow Ranked a Top Neurological Hospital by Newsweek

In its inaugural list of “America’s Best Neurological Hospitals,” Newsweek ranked Barrow at No. 18. The media organization compiled data from health care professionals, hospital quality metrics, and patient experience surveys.

Barrow Expands Research Footprint with Neuro Analytics Center

Brad Racette, MD, and Chia-Ling Phuah, MD, MMSc, officially opened the Barrow Neuro Analytics Center, which aims to revolutionize neurological research and expand Phoenix’s research footprint into the areas of environmental neurology and health equity. The Barrow Neuro Analytics Center, located at the Park Central property in the Phoenix Medical Quarter, comprises a 10,099-square-foot dry laboratory housing 10 principal research investigators and their dedicated teams.

Newsweek Names Barrow Spine Surgeons Among America’s Best

Newsweek named Jay Turner, MD, PhD, and Juan Uribe, MD, in its 2024 list of “America’s Best Spine Surgeons.” The list was curated using a combination of Medicare data and state-specific survey results from experts in the field.

Barrow Expands Global Footprint Through New Partnership in South Africa

Barrow formalized its partnership with the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa, both to improve neurological care in South Africa and to provide Barrow neurology residents with global health experience.

Interns Bring Global Perspectives to Neurology Residency Program

Health equity and global neuroscience serve as pillars of the Neurology Residency Program at Barrow. We proudly introduced three first-year adult neurology residents at Barrow who embody this commitment, bringing unique perspectives from their experiences in Central Africa, South Africa, and Mexico.

Phoenix resident and devoted grandfather Dana Garrett shared his story of being diagnosed with throat cancer—and how the head and neck cancer team at Barrow helped him beat it.

Randy Ehlers, of Chandler, Arizona, described how Vladimir Shvarts, MD, and the Barrow Epilepsy Center team have improved his quality of life and given him hope for the future.

Arizona Father Overcomes Oropharyngeal Cancer at Barrow

Fueled by his faith, his love for his family, support from friends, and encouraging words from a class of fifth-graders, John Burroughs fought through seven weeks of radiation and chemotherapy at the Head and Neck Cancer Program at Barrow. Today, the 63-year-old father remains cancer free.

Seizure-Free for Six Years, Patient Credits Barrow Epilepsy Center

Marissa Amaya Ochoa, a Barrow Epilepsy Center patient who celebrated six years seizure-free this year, expressed gratitude for neurologist Courtney Schusse, MD, saying, “I owe her my life.”

Single Dad Triumphs Over Severe Stroke in Time for Father’s Day

Dave Allen celebrated Father’s Day with his two daughters after experiencing a massive stroke and making a remarkable recovery at the Center for Transitional Neuro-Rehabilitation at Barrow.


Research

NIH Funds Study of Secondary Injury After Stroke Treatment

Saif Ahmad, PhD, and Andrew Ducruet, MD, received a $3.6 million grant from the National Institutes of Health for a study aimed at understanding how and why some people experience a secondary injury following reperfusion therapies. They hope to pave the way for a drug that could prevent secondary injury.

BNAC Co-Director Chia-Ling Phuah, MD, Earns Grants from NIH, DoD

Dr. Phuah received a $3.9 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to harness the power of machine learning to demystify white matter hyperintensities. She also earned $2.5 million from the U.S. Department of Defense to study the intersection of traumatic brain injury and Alzheimer’s disease.

NIH Funds Further Study of Manganese Exposure, Neurological Health

The National Institutes of Health awarded a $2.9 million R01 grant to Barrow Chair of Neurology Brad Racette, MD, and his team to study whether environmental exposure to manganese is linked to neurodegenerative disease—just as demand for this mineral is poised to soar due to the electric vehicle battery industry. The study addresses an environmental justice concern raised by the residents of Meyerton, South Africa, where a large manganese smelter operated for more than 50 years. Dr. Racette also hopes this work will ultimately inform manganese regulations worldwide.

Neurocritical Care Director Ruchira Jha, MD, Takes Steps Toward Advancing TBI Treatment

Dr. Jha received an R21 grant from the National Institutes of Health for a study aimed at identifying biomarkers and precise therapeutic targets to predict and prevent contusion expansion in TBI. She also contributed to the publication of a vast, interactive atlas of cells and how they responded to TBI.

First Participant Enrolled in NIH-Funded Access for All in ALS Consortium

Established in fall 2023, ALL ALS announced the successful enrollment of its first participant in 2024. The multi-institutional effort aims to disrupt the ALS clinical research landscape using open science methods to build broadly accessible resources. The West Clinical Coordinating Center is located at Barrow.

Pioneering Device May Advance Neurosurgery, Researchers Say

Researchers at Barrow and collaborating institutions performed a first-of-its-kind study of confocal laser endomicroscopy, analyzing the ability of the device to better detect infiltrating margins of gliomas in patients undergoing surgery for these tumors.

Erroneous Genetic Sequence ID’d in Specific Cells of ALS, FTD Patients

In collaboration with researchers at other institutions, Rita Sattler, PhD, and Lauren Gittings, PhD, detected cryptic exons in specific brain cells in ALS and FTD patients carrying a mutation in the C9orf72 gene.
