Fortune Magazine Top Teaching Hospital
Fortune Magazine ranked St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center, the home of Barrow Neurological Institute, fourth on its 2022 list of the nation’s 15 Top Major Teaching Hospitals. Barrow offers some of the largest and most sought-after neuroscience training programs in the country. The ranking, developed in partnership with the data company Merative, is based on clinical outcomes, patient experience, operational efficiency, and financial health.
2022 Alzheimer Award
Yonas E. Geda, MD, received the 2022 Alzheimer Award from the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease for a paper he co-authored on physical activity and the trajectory of cognitive changes in older adults. Each year, members of the journal’s extensive editorial board select the article published during the previous year that has had the most significant impact on Alzheimer’s disease research.
Dr. Geda, a neuropsychiatrist and behavioral neurologist in the Alzheimer’s and Memory Disorders Program at Barrow, shares the award with co-author Janina Krell-Roesch, PhD, of Karlsruher Institut für Technologie (KIT) in Germany.
CNS Top Paper of the Year
A paper from Barrow Neurological Institute was selected as the 2022 Top Paper of the Year from the journal Neurosurgery by the Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS). Barrow neurosurgeon Andrew Little, MD, was the first author on the paper entitled, “Postoperative oral antibiotics and sinonasal outcomes following endoscopic transsphenoidal surgery for pituitary tumors (POET) study: a multicenter, prospective, randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled study.”
Doximity Residency Ranking: Neurosurgery
Doximity, an online networking service for medical professionals, again ranked Barrow Neurological Institute No. 2 for neurosurgery residency programs in its 2022-23 Residency Navigator. The ranking is based on program reputation.
Doximity Residency Ranking: Neurology
Barrow Neurological Institute climbed 30 spots in Doximity’s Residency Navigator for neurology residency programs. The 2022-23 list ranks Barrow No. 45, based on program reputation.
Alzheimer’s Conference Top Presentation
Danielle Eagan, PhD, a neuropsychologist at Barrow, was selected as the No. 3 top presenter at an international conference on cognitive disorders. The conference, held in Marseille, France, was the 34th annual meeting of Groupe de Recherche sur la maladie d’Alzheimer (GRAL). The top presenters were selected by the meeting’s science committee. Dr. Eagan presented a case study of cognitive affective syndrome in asymmetric cerebellar atrophy.
Nurse of the Year
Brenda Splichal, a nurse in the Neuro-Intensive Care Unit at Barrow, has received the St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center Nursing Excellence Award: Nurse of the Year. She was nominated not only for the care and advocacy she provides to patients but also for her initiative and leadership in improving operations.
Nursing Excellence in Teaching/Innovation
Ina Reynolds, a nurse educator at Barrow, has received the St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center Nursing Excellence Award for New Knowledge, Innovation, and Improvements: Excellence in Teaching, Evidence-Based Teaching, or Innovation. She was nominated for her caring, supportive, encouraging, and inspiring approach to teaching.
