Barrow Neurosurgery Residency Program Ranked No. 1 by Doximity

Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, Arizona is home to the nation’s No. 1 neurosurgery residency program, according to the newest Residency Navigator released by Doximity.

The residency directory consistently ranks Barrow among the top neurosurgery residency programs based on reputation, and the Institute’s rise to the highest spot for 2024-25 is a culmination of nominations, ratings, and reviews by Doximity’s network. This network consists of more than 80 percent of all United States physicians.

Barrow neurosurgery trainees convene for daily teaching rounds, a longstanding tradition in the Barrow Neurosurgery Residency Program.

As an online networking service for medical professionals, Doximity updates its Residency Navigator each year to empower graduating medical students to make informed decisions when applying for residency programs. According to Doximity’s website, approximately 90 percent of graduating fourth-year medical students use this directory.

“The Institute’s No. 1 ranking by Doximity for its Neurosurgery Residency Program is a remarkable accomplishment,” said Barrow President and CEO and Chair of Neurosurgery Michael T. Lawton, MD. “We are dedicated to our teaching mission and work tirelessly to create the best training environment anywhere in this country for our residents, inside and outside of the operating room. It’s a special honor for me, having trained here in a great program decades ago and to be leading it now to an even better place.”

The Barrow Department of Neurosurgery celebrates defending their title as champions of the Neurosurgery Charity Softball Tournament in New York City’s Central Park.

With 11 dedicated neurosurgery operating rooms, two neuroendovascular suites, and more than 5,800 neurosurgical procedures performed annually, Barrow exposes residents to a high volume of brain and spine cases, ranging from routine to complex. Barrow residents also enjoy graduated autonomy and opportunities to innovate under the mentorship of leading surgeons in each of the neurosurgical subspecialties.

But graduating medical students aren’t only drawn to Barrow for its academic and surgical excellence. “There is a unique camaraderie among our 28 residents that I believe sets our program apart,” said Program Director Francisco Ponce, MD. “The renowned Barrow ‘esprit de corps’ is what ultimately attracts top medical students from around the country to come to Phoenix for their residency. It is an incredible team, and it is exciting to see what we know and feel everyday reflected in the new Doximity rankings.”
