Dr. Holly Shill Discusses Parkinson’s Disease in Arizona Republic Op-Ed
Dr. Shill, the director of the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center at Barrow, stated that while the cause of Parkinson’s disease is unknown and a cure has not been found, “Parkinson’s disease is not a death sentence.”
“The medical community has come to a better understanding of how Parkinson’s starts and progresses,” she wrote. “This is leading to more specific treatments that address the basic disease biology instead of simply treating the effects.”
She discussed the importance of exercise in disease management and said that the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center focuses on quality of life rather than simply symptom management. She also noted that Barrow is a world leader in offering Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) as a treatment for Parkinson’s.
