Barrow Global Neurosurgery
At a Glance: Barrow Global Neurosurgery
Barrow Global Neurosurgery partner site Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre (KCMC) is located in Moshi, Tanzania. The program’s goals with our partner are twofold: building capacity through national and multidisciplinary collaborations, and providing rigorous but accessible advancements in technology and education.
Our fellowship begins on-site at Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, Arizona, and transitions to Tanzania. This provides an opportunity for fellows to immerse in both the Barrow and KCMC settings. Serving 15 million people in Northern Tanzania, KCMC is a referral hospital just below the national level.
Our approach centers on clinical care supported by research and education. Onsite, we prioritize working closely with the KCMC team to observe and enhance clinical and surgical workflows as we address local strengths, challenges, and resources.
The neurosurgery team at KCMC consists of two attendings and general surgery residents and cares for around 25 patients each day. Here, we focus on improving training, support, and staffing through collaborations across Barrow and KCMC. In the outpatient clinic, we manage over 50 patients per week with a variety of neurosurgical concerns.
Sign Up for Barrow Global Updates
Our wide host of collaborations spanning the U.S., Africa, and the world involves donating functional equipment and developing sustainable supply chains. We implement technological modalities across patient care, education, and research, such as digital slides, 3D augmented reality photos for neuroanatomy, and remote clinical collaboration tools.
International Visiting Scholars and Clinical Observership Program
The visiting scholar and neuroscience observer program at Barrow Neurological Institute enhances the rigorous academic environment here. International scholars (fully trained neurosurgeons) who visit Barrow for short-term or extended stays greatly improve their understanding of what is possible in advanced clinical neurosurgery, as well as how the latest in neuroscience research translates into patient care.
These scholars in turn enrich our learning environment through the unique international perspective they share with faculty and students on the treatment of neurosurgical patients around the world.
There will be an application cycle twice a year to provide stipend(s) for select international visiting scholars and clinical observers. Applicants must provide a “Statement of Need” and receive approval by our selection committee to be awarded the stipend. The stipend will be granted by financial need and merit for each scholar/observer to obtain clinical experience at Barrow Neurological Institute for a 90-day period.
