About Our Fellowship

The ACGME-accredited Vascular Neurology Fellowship Program at Barrow Neurological Institute offers two 1-year training positions for graduates of an adult neurology residency program.

Goals & Objectives

  • Gain proficiency in acute treatment of vascular neurologic emergencies, including clinical diagnosis and management of ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke
  • Understand pathophysiology of various cerebrovascular disorders, and develop expertise in their diagnosis, management, and prevention
  • Acquire the knowledge and skillset to provide high quality care to a diverse group of inpatients and outpatients with cerebrovascular disorders
  • Work effectively in collaboration with teams oriented to the care of patients with cerebrovascular disorders
  • Gain an understanding of the clinical research process in vascular neurology and be able to critically evaluate stroke literature
  • Learn and develop skills to acquire and conduct clinical trials
  • Develop skills to teach medical students, interns, and residents
  • Participate in the quality improvement process of our Joint Commission-certified comprehensive stroke center

The Vascular Fellowship program at Barrow Neurological Institute offers two positions each year. This highly competitive, ACGME-approved program fulfills the requirements necessary for vascular neurology board eligibility.

Conferences and Seminars

  • Weekly vascular neurology case conference and didactics
  • Monthly journal club
  • Weekly neuroradiology conference
  • Monthly neurovascular research meeting
  • Lecture opportunities to teach medical students and residents

Curriculum

  • Six months of inpatient stroke neurology service (home call, shared with attending)
  • One half-day outpatient continuity clinic each week throughout the year
  • Six months of electives (no call):
    • Neuroradiology (including diagnostic radiology, interventional neuroradiology, and neurosonology)
    • Neurorehabilitation
    • Neurocritical care
    • Endovascular neurosurgery
    • Research
    • Additional electives available

Fellows will have the opportunity to take part in telestroke call for our mobile Barrow Emergency Stroke Treatment Unit, covering the City of Phoenix with a response radius of 20 minutes. In addition, fellows will become co-investigators on active stroke trials—gaining valuable training in clinical investigation and trial development skills—and assisting with patient recruitment and study management.

Fellows are encouraged to attend the International Stroke Conference as well as other national conferences, especially if presenting research. Professional development funds for conferences and formal TCD courses are available for fellows.

Eligibility

  • A current valid and unrestricted license to practice medicine in the United States or Canada or its territories
  • Graduate status from a ACGME-accredited residency program
  • Board certified, or eligible for certification, in a primary ABMS or RCPSC specialty (as specified by the Subspecialty)
  • Completion of USMLE steps I, II, and III.

Foreign medical graduates with equivalent qualifications are also eligible to apply provided the following criteria are met:

  • Graduate status from an ACGME-accredited residency program
  • Completion of all three of the USMLE examinations
  • Completion of a CSA exam
  • ECFMG certificate (if applicable) – Foreign applicants must have ECFMG certification. We only accept J1 Visa; we do not sponsor H1 visa.

We are now accepting applications for the 2023-2024 academic year (two fellows per year).

  • Personal statement
  • Three letters of recommendation, may include PD letter (waived rights to view/must be sent by letter writer or program coordinator)
  • Medical school transcript
  • USMLE/COMLEX results

Additional documents to be submitted by March 1 of interview season:

  • Barrow Application (application will be forwarded to you after you apply through ERAS)
  • Medical school diploma
  • Letter of good standing
  • ECFMG certificate (if applicable)
  • Prelim Certificate of Completion (if applicable)
