Aneurysms & Cerebrovascular Disorders Program

At a Glance: Our Aneurysm & Cerebrovascular Disorders Program

When you or a loved one learn of an aneurysm, arteriovenous malformation, dural arteriovenous fistula (DAVFs) or another blood vessel disorder in a brain or spinal cord, it’s completely understandable to feel frightened. It’s why our team of dedicated neurovascular specialists—endovascular and vascular neurosurgeons, neuroscience nurses, and neurologists—center so much of their work on personal education and empowerment.

We rely on decades of collective experience at our Aneurysms and Cerebrovascular Disorders Program to help ease your fears. As part of Barrow Neurological Institute, we’ve been rated as a Top Hospital for Neurosurgery (Newsweek), a Top Hospital for Rehabilitation (U.S. News & World Report) and we’re members of the Alliance to Cure Cavernous Malformation Center of Excellence. Our neurosurgeons have treated some of the most complex aneurysms and malformations around the globe, and are truly world renowned in the treatment of brain and spinal cord blood vessel disorders.

Feeling a tiny bit more at ease? We hope this is just the beginning.

The Barrow Difference

Whether you undergo conventional aneurysm or cerebrovascular treatment or a less invasive option, you’re in the best hands at Barrow Neurological Institute. Our team of neurosurgeons are proud to have:

  • Treated more than 15,000 aneurysms;
  • Operated on more than 5,000 cavernous malformations; and
  • Treated more DAVFs than almost any other facility in the world.

Our team includes experts in microneurosurgery, skull base surgery, endovascular neurosurgery, and radiosurgery. Many of our nurses have received specialized training in the neurosciences, and have a strong history caring for patients with blood vessel disorders. Successful treatment for an aneurysm, arteriovenous malformation (AVM), or other malformation depends heavily on skill and experience—and this is a defining feature of the Aneurysms and Cerebrovascular Disorders Program at Barrow Neurological Institute.

Neuro-Rehabilitation Services

When aneurysms and other blood vessel malformations rupture, they bleed into surrounding tissue. And when this happens in the brain, it causes a hemorrhagic stroke.

The Barrow Neuro-Rehabilitation Center offers inpatient, outpatient, and transitional neuro-rehabilitation services for those who have experienced this type of stroke. Our team includes physical, occupational, and speech therapists; rehabilitation physicians and nurses; and neuropsychologists. Additionally, we’re a leader in the use of rehabilitation neuro-robotics—technologies that mimic normal human movements and adapt to support and challenge the abilities of each patient.

Aneurysm and AVM Research Center

To better understand the genetics, formation, and rupture of vascular malformations, we’ve established the Barrow Aneurysm and AVM Research Center. The Center is committed to collaboration between neuroscientists and clinicians who share the goal of developing new therapeutic approaches to stabilize aneurysms and AVMs, and prevent their rupture. Many of our patients are offered the opportunity to participate in clinical trials to advance this field and our commitment to robust research.

Mark Barrett, an endovascular surgery patient standing with his husband

If I hadn’t been in this place in the care of Dr. Albuquerque, with his expertise and skill, I might still be struggling to find out what’s wrong with me.

My case was complex and different. The options, for me, were pretty grim. But it seemed like a breath of fresh air because Dr. Lawton said he could help me. It was a blessing.

We consulted with Europe’s top neurosurgeons and were told that my son’s lesion was inoperable. Without surgery, the lesion could continue to rupture at any time and cause paralysis or even catastrophic death. We are grateful to have found Barrow to treat Stephan. It’s spectacular and truly a miracle.
