Derek Fulcher, MD

Neuroanesthesiologist
Operations Director, Neuroanesthesiology

Derek Fulcher, MD, is a neuroanesthesiologist and the operations director of the Department of Neuroanesthesiology at Barrow Neurological Institute. He is board certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology.

Dr. Fulcher’s expertise includes anesthesia care for patients undergoing neurosurgical procedures, including complex cerebrovascular surgery, complex spine surgery, endovascular neurosurgery, sitting craniotomies, and pain-relieving procedures. He also specializes in asleep-awake-asleep craniotomies with language and motor mapping and asleep mapping procedures for the removal of brain tumors. As operations director, Dr. Fulcher leads short- and long-term logistical operations of the Department, creates call schedules and manages physician staffing, and weighs in on all matters pertaining to Department policy. He is a member of the American Society of Anesthesiologists, the Arizona Society of Anesthesiologists, and the Society for Neuroscience in Anesthesiology and Critical Care.

Dr. Fulcher earned his medical degree from the University of Arizona College of Medicine in Tucson, where he also completed a surgical internship. He completed his anesthesia residency at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, where his training had a strong emphasis on neuroanesthesia.

An associate professor of anesthesiology at both Creighton University and the University of Arizona, Dr. Fulcher is passionate about educating the next generation of anesthesiologists. He has a wealth of experience in teaching and supervising both medical students and anesthesiology residents.
