Marc McLawhorn, MD

Chair, Neuroanesthesiology

Marc McLawhorn, MD, is the Chair of the Department of Neuroanesthesiology at Barrow Neurological Institute. He is board certified in anesthesiology by the American Board of Anesthesiology.

Dr. McLawhorn’s expertise includes anesthesia care for patients requiring complex neurosurgical treatments. He also specializes in trauma anesthesia and in-flight critical care. He is a member of the American Society of Anesthesiologists, the Society for Neuroscience in Anesthesiology and Critical Care, and the Special Operations Medical Association.

Dr. McLawhorn earned his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, where he also received a master’s degree in clinical laboratory science. He completed his anesthesiology residency at the Medical University of South Carolina and his neurosurgical anesthesia fellowship at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina.

Dr. McLawhorn’s research interests include awake craniotomies and austere medicine. He is also the director of the 943rd Aerospace Medicine Squadron Critical Care Air Transport (CCAT) team at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson. He is responsible for the resuscitation, stabilization, and critical care movement of injured soldiers.
