We know you’re bound to have questions about your concussion or brain injury prognosis—and that’s why our team of highly-trained specialists work diligently to provide you with answers. The first of its kind in the nation, the Brain Injury & Sports Neurology Center at Barrow Neurological Institute offers cutting-edge and compassionate treatment for adults and adolescents with concussions, traumatic brain injuries (TBIs), and spinal cord injuries.
We excel in the diagnosis and treatment of post-concussion symptoms, and we’re leading the nation in creating new ways to help prevent and address concussions in youth and high school sports. Our Barrow Brainbook concussion education program is the first of its kind in the country, and has been taken by nearly every high school athlete in Arizona. We also provide resources for and partner with athletic trainers to ensure that concussions are diagnosed and treated quickly when they occur.

Protecting Arizona’s Athletes
Beyond subspecialized care, our concussion education and outreach is far-reaching: nearly every high school student in Arizona has completed Barrow Brainbook, a web-based concussion course that’s the first mandated education and testing module for student athletes in the U.S. In addition, we offer a concussion baseline testing program and sideline consultations for high school athletes. Each of these services are provided through the Barrow Concussion Network, a consortium of distinguished organizations in Arizona that enable the exchange of expertise and resources.
Serving the Underserved
Although there’s no shortage of athletes in our clinic, they represent just one subset of patients affected by traumatic brain injuries (TBIs).
In 2012, our Center developed a program to address survivors of domestic violence. We partner with community shelters to identify those with TBIs as a result of domestic abuse, and we treat these individuals for free in our clinic regardless of insurance, thanks to generous grant funds and donations. All patients in this program undergo evaluation by a neurologist and are connected with a social worker for help navigating the necessary health care system. Finally, our team continues to conduct clinical research to raise awareness and improve treatment for TBIs caused by domestic violence.
