Stereotactic Laser Ablation
What is Stereotactic Laser Ablation?
Stereotactic laser thermoablation is a minimally invasive technology that uses energy in the form of light to heat and destroy tumors or damaged tissue in the brain.
In this procedure, a frame is placed around the head and a probe is inserted into a small incision in the scalp. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is used to guide the placement of the laser, which automatically shuts off if it approaches surrounding healthy tissue.
What is Stereotactic Laser Ablation used for?
- Brain tumors, including hypothalamic hamartoma
- Seizures resulting from a hypothalamic hamartoma or other lesions in the brain
Am I a good candidate for Stereotactic Laser Ablation?
You may be a good candidate for stereotactic laser thermoablation if you have been diagnosed with a hypothalamic hamartoma or some kind of tumor or lesion in the brain. This procedure may not be a good option if your tumor is large or the cause of your symptoms is difficult to identify.
